Muay Thai or Thai boxing is the cultural martial art of Thailand. The origin of Muay Thai dates back several hundred years, and was, essentially, developed as a form of close-combat that used the entire body as a weapon. However, it must be added that the history of Muay Thai, and its’ direct origin is a question of debate among modern scholars. Much of the history of Muay Thai was lost when the Burmese sacked Ayudhaya, the capital city of Siam (Thailand) in the 14th century. The Burmese looted the temples and depositories of knowledge held in the capital, and most written history was lost in this period. Wiang Kum Kam was a settlement long before it became King Mangrai’s capital around 1287-90. Frequent flooding caused Mangrai to move, but the place remained important throughout the Lanna period. The site was later buried under mud when the river changed course during the Burmese period. The area was restored as a historical park during the 1980’s. Surrounded by paddy and village houses, the extensive site has a pleasant rural feel, yet it is very close to Chiang Mai.Continue on Koh Klang Road past Wat Chedi Liam, to reach the McKean Institute. Follow the river to Ban Pa Dua for a pleasant rural ride and to see woodcarving. At the Wiang Kum Kam Information Center, Wat Chedi Liam and Wat Chang Kam you can make a tour with a horse carriage (200 Baht per carriage per tour) or with a tram (20 seats, 1-5 persons 250 Baht, 6-10 persons 300 Baht, 11-15 persons 350 Baht, 16-20 persons 400 Baht per tram). Doi Inthanon is the highest summit in the country and during the winter season the temperature on the top of the mountain can drop to 0 degrees Celcius. This mountain, which is the end point for the Himalayan mountain range, traverses Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and Thailand; it reaches 2,565 meters above the sea level. Within an hour drive of Chiang Mai town are numerous places that can provide that picture perfect postcard spot. Despite the cold from November to December, trees and plants of all sorts grow here to form a mountain-side forest. Due to the difference of temperatures in high and low altitudes, the mountain supports more than one type of forest: the lower part of the mountain has plants that grow with humidity and the cold. The Most Beautiful waterfall in Chiang Mai

Mae Ya Waterfall is also one Chiang Mai’s most impressive. More than 230 meters high, it cascades down a steep and wide triangular shelf into a pool. Located only 500 meters from the parking area, there is a tented area with food on offer and it is a good setting for a picnic. Sirithan Waterfall is a medium sized waterfall within the park of around 40 meters, which drops down two large steps. From the main road there is the shot jungle walk to access it and there is also the scenic viewing deck.
